Tom Arthurs

Winner in 2001 of the Peter Whittingham Award for musicians under 26 and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2008-10, Tom Arthurs has broadcast frequently and performed internationally. On a visit to Canada in 2001 he studied with Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano and Jim Black. Subsequently he has performed with jazz luminaries such as John Surman, John Taylor, Jack DeJohnette, Tom Rainey and Kenny Wheeler. His regular collaborations include a duo with pianist Richard Fairhurst and a long-standing trio with bassist Jasper Høiby and drummer Stuart Ritchie. Arthurs has developed a distinctive compositional voice. In 2009 he was commissioned to write Postcards From Pushkin for the City of London Festival and And Distant Shore for the BBC Proms. In 2010 the BBC Concert Orchestra premiered his Fire Paintings (For Yves Klein). Arthurs is a member of London’s F-IRE Collective and the music and visual arts group Not Applicable. He is also active in Zoom!, a project to establish connections between European jazz collectives.
