Orphy Robinson

Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson has composed for television, film, theatre and concert hall, and played music ranging from free improvisation to jazz fusion and funk. His commissioned works include the dance suite 42 Shades In The Black, performed at the Atlanta Olympics; Suite D’Lorenzo, performed by Ensemble Bash at the BBC Proms; and a piece for the Arts Council marking the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slavery Act. A member of the acclaimed Jazz Warriors and regular collaborator with Courtney Pine, Robinson has also worked with Andy Sheppard, Jazz Jamaica All Stars, Wynton Marsalis, Hugh Masekela, Neneh Cherry, Manu Dibango, Butch Morris, Lol Coxhill, Nigel Kennedy, Evan Parker, David Murray, Derek Bailey, Lester Bowie, Nick Mason, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Tony Bevan, Steve Noble, Han Bennink, Springheel Jack, Sunny Murray, The Funk Jazz Collective, The London Improvisers Orchestra and Robert Wyatt. His own groups have included Creative Force, Code Five, The Nubian Vibes Ensemble and The Spontaneous Cosmic Raw Xtra. For ten years Robinson led the Music Education Project at London’s Hackney Empire.
