Lol Coxhill

Sopranino and soprano saxophones

Renowned as a fluent and resourceful soloist and one of the most distinctive instrumental voices in contemporary music, Lol Coxhill has nonetheless played in an unusually wide range of situations. He has backed visiting R&B artists such as Rufus Thomas, been a member of Kevin Ayers’s group The Whole World, toured with The Damned and appeared with various experimental theatre outfits, including Welfare State. He has been a member of The Brotherhood Of Breath, Dedication Orchestra, The Spontaneous Music Ensemble and Trevor Watts’s Moiré Music, collaborated with sound poet Bob Cobbing and participated in Derek Bailey’s Company. He has performed electroacoustic improvisation in The Recedents, with Roger Turner and Mike Cooper, and has refurbished well-worn songs with Steve Beresford and Tony Coe as The Melody Four. His innumerable musical associations have included duets with Steve Lacy, Evan Parker, David Bedford, Veryan Weston, Alex Ward and Adam Bohman. He has also worked occasionally in television and film. Coxhill is celebrated in Richard White’s film Frog Dance and Jeff Nuttall’s book The Bald Soprano.
