Gail Brand became active on the London improvising scene in 1994, while studying at Middlesex University, where her composition teacher was Veryan Weston. She took up trombone 30 years ago and has used it to make music across a range of genres, from free playing to classical and pop. She was a member of The Simon Fell Quartet, and worked with Mark Sanders, Phil Durrant and Pat Thomas in the adventurous improvising group Lunge. As well as leading her own quartet she currently runs a duo with Sanders, another with American vocalist Morgan Guberman and plays with Shabaka Hutchings, Alex Ward, Dominic Lash and others in the large ensemble SomeDectet. Past collaborators have included Billy Jenkins, Phil Minton, Lol Coxhill and Maggie Nicols. In 2009 Brand launched her own label, Regardless. She is a qualified music therapist and teaches at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the British Musicians Union.
